“What I’m Reading” is my contribution to the WWW Wednesday meme run by Sam from Taking On a World of Words. The Ws represent three questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What I’m reading now

I’m two thirds of the way through Human Acts by Han Kang, the book I selected as a result of my TBR Book Jar lucky dip for January. The narrative is told from the perspectives of different people who were caught up in a student-led political protest in South Korea. Human Acts is a shortish novel but I’m taking a long time to read it because it’s such an intensely emotional narrative.

In parallel I’m continuing to read Relearning to Read: Adventures in Not-Knowing,by Ann Morgan. This is partly based on her experiences of reading a book from every country participating in the 2012 Olympics. She poses the question of how to approach books that represent unfamiliar territory for a reader and whether, that unfamiliarity actually enhances the reading experience.

What I just finished reading

I enjoyed Mrs March by Virginia Feito back in 2024 though enjoyed does seem a strange word to use for a novel largely about a woman’s descent into paranoia. Her latest novel Victorian Psycho takes the idea of mental instability and ratchets it up to boiling point with a central character who is the governess from hell. It’s an utterly bonkers novel but highly entertaining. The paperback edition is due out in February.

You all know by now that i’m not a planner so this is a tough question. I might go for The Thirty Nine Steps by John Buchan an old and very tatty copy of which I found last week while searching for an entirely different book. I’ve seen multiple film versions so it will be interesting to see how far they departed from the book.

If not, I might opt for one of the advanced copies I’ve received via NetGalley. I steered well clear of NetGalley in 2025 because it was too tempting to request books and I found I wasn’t actually reading them. I’m aiming to bei more controlled this year.

  1. I love totally bonkers, so I will definitely check out Victorian Psycho now!

    1. I bet she had fun writing it

  2. Good to see you’re pursuing your TBR Book Jar project as I know you were slightly struggling with it a little while ago. The Buchan title is the only one of his I’ve read – twice now, the second time just before I started blogging – and, I thought, better than the couple of film versions I’ve watched.

    1. Ah now that does interest me – the film versions I’ve seen are a bit too boys’ own adventures for my taste

      1. Though there were one or two aspects that troubled me (which I can’t recall now but which may possibly have involved a hint of antisemitism) the novel had real menace, very reminiscent at times of Childers’ The Riddle of the Sands from a few years later.

        1. I didn’t get very far into “Riddle” – just not to my taste

        2. Yes, very Empire, very male, and not much in tune in our present attitudes.

  3. The Thirty Nine Steps: go for it!

    1. i obey your command!!

  4. Victorian Psycho does sound entertaining! I haven’t really considered reading it, but I will now.

    1. I’m hoping I haven’t misunderstood it completely and the author really did intend for it to be outrageously entertaining

  5. I hope you enjoy 39 Steps if you do decide to read it, I have a copy of Greenmantle and should get around to reading that too!

    1. I’ve heard of Greenmantle but haven’t really checked out what it’s about. But if I like 39steps I shall add it to my list

  6. Haven’t read the Buchan for ages, but enjoyed it when I did!

    1. It does sound promising

  7. Relearning to Read looks interesting.I enjoyed The Thirty Nine Steps book and as far as I can remember it’s not much like the films. I’ve watched an old black and white one and a recent BBC series with Rupert Penry-Jones – O enjoyed that too,

    1. The films are not that good so I’m heartened to hear the book is different

  8. I adored Victorian Psycho!

  9. Bonkers seems a popular description for Victorian Psycho. Looking forward to reading it. I’ve become very disciplined about NetGalley. It’s very easy to get carried away.

    1. I think if I had the NetGalley books in hard copy I’d be more likely to read them because I don’t enjoy reading on a device that much.

  10. I’m currently reading The Unworthy by Augustina Bazzterrica and Amazon recommended Victorian Psycho as a follow up. I think I’ll give it a miss.
I read Thirty Nine Steps (and Greenmantle) as a boy. I still have them but they’re a bit too ra-ra for King and Country to rate a reread.

    1. Yes I can imagine the Buchan was very much of its time
