classicsclub3It’s been a little quiet in the Classics Club lately so I was delighted to see that another round of the spin challenge has been announced. I’ve not always managed to read the book identified in previous rounds but it’s still a good way of nudging me towards some of the remaining titles on my list.

The rules are as always:  list any twenty books you’ve left to read from the Classics Club list. Whichever number turns up when the spin result is announced, thats the title to read before end of October.

Since I’m just over half way towards the goal of 50 books by August 2017, I don’t have too many options left. My selection of 20 is divided into two based on date of publication. ** indicates I’ve read that book once before but its on my list because I don’t think I did it justice first time around.

Pre twentieth century

1. Candide — Voltaire 1759
2. The Black Sheep — Honore Balzac 1842
3. Evelina — Frances Burney 1778
4. Dr Thorne — Anthony Trollope 1858
5. Adam Bede — George Eliot 1859
6.** Can You Forgive Her — Anthony Trollope 1864
7. **Anna Karenina — Leo Tolstoy 1873-77
8. The Way we Live Now — Anthony Trollope 1875
9. ** Daniel Deronda — George Eliot 1876
10. A Parisian Affair and other stories — Maupassant 1880s

Twentieth century
11. The Secret Agent — Joseph Conrad 1907
12. Age of Innocence — Edith Wharton 1920
13. All Passion Spent – Vita Sackville West 1932
14. A Room of One’s Own — Woolf 1932
15. **Frost in May — Antonia White 1933
16. The Grapes of Wrath — John Steinbeck 1939
17. The Pursuit Of Love — Nancy Mitford 1945
18. The Charioteer — Mary Renault 1953
19. The Quiet American — Graham Greene 1955
20. Love in the Time of Cholera — Gabriel Garcia Marquez 1985

None of the titles below are ones I’m nervous about getting though I’m hoping that I’ll end up with one of these…A parisian affair

  1. What do you think about this page: https://read.rifflebooks.com/ ?

    1. The site looks easy to use but I don’t see that it’s bringing anything more than we can get already from Good reads and Library thing. am I missing something?

  2. That’s a nice selection. The Maupassant sounds terrific too. Love in the time of Cholera though was a bit of a dud for me 🙁 . I am currently reading Lady Audley’s Secret (skipped the spin because I so badly wanted to read this one), and it’s really good fun 🙂

    1. I did start reading Life in the Time of Cholera many years ago but couldn’t get I to it. I thought it was maybe just the wrong bok for my mood at the time so I’d give it another go.

  3. I like your acknowledgement that there are books you know you didn’t do justice to the first time around, Karen. This is so often the case I think, if only because when we first read them we probably didn’t have the life experience to really appreciate what the writer was getting at.

    1. You’ve just given me an idea for a blog post. Now I just need the time to write it.

  4. Maupassant would be great a read! But so would be the Mitford 🙂

    Happy Spinning!

    1. I didn’t get either but not to worry, I am going to be happily reading George Eliot.

  5. It seems we both have Dr Thorne on our spin lists.

    1. But neither of us got him darn it. I bet though you will get to him before I do Ali. You’re so much more focused where I get waylaid whenever new books come to my attention

  6. Such a great idea. Good luck for your choice 🙂

    1. Neither of my top favoured ones got selected but I’m ok since I didn’t have anything on the list that I would have groaned at if that had come up.

      1. It’s always good to have a list of books that are good. Maybe you will find a new favourite? 🙂

  7. I’ve read a few of those, but I think the one eventually I’d like to read is The Quiet American. I read a few others of his for a class I had on British literature. Maybe someday I’ll get to this one too.

    1. That’s one of the few Greene’s I have never read. I did a muddle on Greene in my final year but felt I rushed him so am rekindling my love.

  8. So many good names there….The Grapes of Wrath is a downer though…

    1. Until three years ago I wouldn’t have had a Steinbeck on my list at all but then our book club read Of Mice and Men which started to change my mind.

  9. I don’t know why. Could never get into Love In The Time Of Cholera. One day I hope to give it another chance.

    1. That’s exactly what I’m doing, giving it another chance since my first experience was not rewarding.

  10. Interesting. I love your possibilities. Fingers crossed for you!

    1. Those crossed fingers didn’t work unfortunately, can you cross your toes next time too please?..

  11. A good list with plenty of variety. It’ll be interesting to see which one comes up – Doctor Thorne is on my list – and on a few other bloggers’ list too, I see (but at a different number). I also have Love in the Time of Cholera on my list.

    1. If there are a few of us with doctor Thorne I wonder of there would be interest in doing a read along next year?
