Classics Club Spinalong Choice
Here we go again – the second Classics Club is imminent. This is where we have to pick a list of 20 books from our Classics Club reading list, and give each a number.
Then with a spin of the virtual roulette wheel, the team at Classics Club will reveal a winning number – all we have to read is to read the matching book from our list by end of July. The rules are open to challenge – so I did think about just putting the same book in twenty times but in the end thought that would be cheating. Tempting though……..
Here’s my list. Many are from the list I did for Spinalong #1 back in March. I’ve tried to include some I’m not that keen on but think its good for my soul as it were
- Pamela (ugh)
- Canterbury Tales
- Wives and Daughters
- Dr Thorne
- Mansfield Park
- Anna Karenina
- Daisy Miller/Washington Square (oh no, not James please!)
- Things Fall Apart (please, please pick me!)
- Love in the Time of Cholera
- Half a Yellow Sun
- Age of Innocence
- L’Assommoir
- Grapes of Wrath (if I must)
- The Pursuit Of Love
- Mrs Dalloway
- Silent Spring (need a bit of non fiction)
- Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont
- The Infinite Plan
- A Parisian Affair and other stories
- Old Gariot

This looks like a great list. Except for Pamela 🙂
I really liked Washington Square, but I haven’t read Daisy Miller. Grapes of Wrath and Anna Karenina are two of my very favorites. Good luck with the spin!
I got one of your favourites Shelley – Anna Karenina which I am very chuffed about. Pamela – oh dear. I struggled to half way through it a few years ago but found it incredibly dull. still its probably good for the soul to actually finish it
What, what, what!? Grapes of Wrath if you must!? Ahhh…. that’s a shot to the heart. One of my favorite books of all time. I love Steinbeck (I’m doing a Steinbeck project right now – reading through his complete works) but Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden are both incredible.
Ok Ok I am suitably chastised! i tried reading it some years ago but didn’t like the style much. but my book group read Mice and Men recently and i didn’t think I would like it much. How wrong I was. So maybe Grapes will similarly surprise me….
We have a few similar titles but on different numbers. A great list!
Good luck 🙂
thats a shame otherwise we could have read them in synch and swapped notes. I keep my fingers crossed you get something good Brona
I added L’Assommoir on number 12. Maybe next time we can get more bloggers to sync their selections!
would indeed be good if there was a way on the classics club site for people to synch….
I’ve read Age of Innocence, L’Assommoir, Grapes of Wrath and Old Goriot and loved them. I’m currently reading Anna Karenina and I’m having a blast. The rest of your list looks really good ! Good luck with the spin
i read that many many years ago but I don’t think I was mature enough to understand it. so I want to re-read it Maud.
That is an interesting list. My picks would be Wives & Daughters and The Age of Innocence. You are brave putting some difficult books for you – I hope the number falls well for you, but if it doesn’t that you get something out of the work you might put in to a more demanding book.
Thanks for the comment Fleur.i enjoyed the last Gaskell I read – North and South – so hoping this one turns out a similar experience. I suppose none of the books on the list are really ones I would dread reading otherwise they just wouldn’t be on the list. wouldn’t be much point would there. unless I am of course a masochist….
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you end up with a great read!
So am I Vasilly. Last time I ended up with Farewell to Arms and discovered that Hemmingway just isn’t my thing
We have one common book, and that is Mrs. Dalloway. And interesting note on Things Fall Apart. I didn’t like that book, and I’m interested to read your thoughts on it once you’re able to finish it.
Why was it about Things Fall About that didn’t work for you Angus?
I remember it was the language. It felt stiff.
Good luck! The only books on your list that I’ve read are 4, 5, 6 and 10 but I enjoyed all of them. Wives and Daughters and The Age of Innocence are on my spin list too.
What do you hope the spin will bring you Helen?
I’m rooting for 10, 11 or 14. ‘Half a Yellow Sun’ is one of the most remarkable books I’ve read.
Good luck! I’m hoping to take part this time too 🙂
